A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
