Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
