European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
